Summer is finally here and so are the times of high heat and humidity. With the changing of the season, storage practices also need to change. Since warmer air is able to hold more water, as ambient temperature rises, moisture is drawn into the surrounding air, including moisture from feed products. Moisture loss generally causes feed to change color, vary in aroma, and take on an unexpected appearance.
When this moisture filled warm air hits a cool floor or wall, it creates condensation and a favorable environment for the growth of mold and yeast. To help combat these negative effects consider these best practices.
Indoors
Feed should always be stored indoors in an area that is cool and dry. Metal walls and concrete flooring tend to hold cooler temperatures for longer periods. Extremely high temperatures can also reduce efficacies of vitamins and some microbial ingredients, such as prebiotics. The area should also be free of insects and rodents.
Pallets and Racks
Feed should be stored on pallets or racks to eliminate contact with floors and walls. This will allow air to move around the product and help prevent condensation. Feed should never be placed directly on the ground or against a wall.
Air
Ideal storage conditions allow for air movement around the product. This helps keep feed dry and cool. During the summer running fans and ensuring proper ventilation will help keep feed in good condition.
Shrink Wrap
Remove all shrink wrap immediately upon arrival. This prevents condensation from building on the feed and facilitates good air movement. This is most important during times of high heat and humidity.
FIFO
Be sure you are following the practice of First In First Out. Rotate stock so the first feed you get in is the first feed that goes out. This simple practice will help prevent feed from becoming spoiled.
Following these storage practices will ensure your feed stays in good condition during the summer months. For additional information contact your Kent Representative or KNG’s Quality Assurance Team.
